China is hiring, at least if you can fly an A320. With the ongoing MAX crisis showing no sign of easing any time soon , China is dealing with a glut of 737 drivers without a ride . However, they are going out of their way to hire anybody who can captain an A320. From !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! :

The relatively few Chinese airlines with A320s continue to hunt for pilots, however, and the money is good. Juneya o Airlines in Shanghai is paying A320 captains between the ages of 30 and 53 $299,000 a year for 14 hours of flying time a week and seven weeks of paid vacation plus an overseas employment allowance of $666 a month.

That’s damn good money, about double what captains are !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! on average in the US. A nd not too much stick time, either. It may not be a bad time to consider a career change, unless you’re already 53 years old, like me.

Timing is everything. The aviation industry is booming right now, especially in Asia. If you’re a 30-something with the skills and maybe no family, you can go make some serious money.

Friends have done this. Good luck getting them to honor that pay and schedule. You have to work through a mediator rep, or headhunter type that cracks the whip to get your pay. That schedule they say is a minimum! Easily more hours than that and their work rules aren’t close to our faa  mandated rules. Oh....and your not Chinese, so you captain the plane until the kid with no time can be captain and that Chinese kid assumes seniority above you and a better schedule. This is a position better labeled ‘whipping boy’ than pilot. But they pay you. So you endure. But why? There’s plenty of positions here that pay. They also train you. So who are they hiring? A mix including guys who are not eligible for hire in US due to firings, behavior, etc. To folks that just like it there. It’s not the picture they make it sound like.

The trick is getting there. Before you can drive the big bus you gotta spend time in shuttle busses. That’s why the short route is flying cargo for the USAF. They’re the rare ones willing to put youngsters behind the stick of a multiengined jet.

You don’t expect them to tell the truth do you? How else will they get guys to go over there? Interesting bit about becoming junior to a Chinese short-timer. So you’re basically a well-paid IP. Still, if you qualify and have no family to worry about, it might be a good deal for a year or two.

Don’t forget about the 1,500 hours you need to get your ATP certificate.

On the other hand, it’s quite possible that a few decades down the road piloting will be automated (if not fully, than at least enough that they could trim down to one pilot per plane, or even a remote pilot pool), and flying skills won’t be in demand (though knowing how to fly would still fun). Still if I were a young pilot, I would be considering taking coding/AI courses so that if I’m being replaced by machines, I could at least be earning money writing the replacements.

Lots of talk about automated planes with single pilots in the future, but I still think that’s a few years away.

And that’s $299,000 in China - where a new Roewe i6 is $12,800 and the threshold for middle class is about $28,000 a year.

Of course, their housing prices are getting pretty crazy.

I worked for a Chinese company once. Would never do it again. Wouldn’t be surprised if they refuse to actually pay what they’re promising. Definitely wouldn’t go to flight school based on what they’re promising. I also used to work near an airport with flight schools. They were filled with Chinese kids, so the labor market will be saturated soon enough.

I’d reckon that Boeing/MCAS cluster might have pushed that out for a bit...  At least, I’d like to think the FAA looks at that with a critical eye.  I get automation and am generally a fan (love me some GPS and Foreflight) but I’d hate to have only one pilot in the cockpit when electrons attack...

How’s your flying been going? I got my license in Sept and have only been up for 3 hours since (life, weather, work, illness all got in the way, inconveniently).

Or when that one pilot has a heart attack. But then some pilot in a remote location would take over.

I’m doing about the same as you. After training and passing the exam, my flying slowed dramatically. I started working on my instrument rating, but after missing a few classes in ground school, I never got caught up and didn’t take the written. My instructor passed along some bad information and we didn’t complete ground school in a way that was compliant with part 141 rules. What’s the difference? Under part 61, you have to have 50 hours of cross-country PIC time under actual or simulated IFR (15 with an instructor, 35 with a safety pilot or an instructor). Under part 141, you only need 35 hours of IFR time which doesn’t have to be cross-country, but it does have to be with an instructor. That makes it a little cheaper, but more importantly, a lot faster to do it under 141 rules.

On the other hand, i f I wait for my son to get his certificate at the end of next summer, he will be able to act as the safety pilot and we both get PIC time flying together. Decisions, decisions.

In the meantime, I’ve been thinking about getting my tailwheel endorsement. That would open up some new opportunities for flying. We keep waffling back and forth on what kind of plane to buy. I thought I’d go cheap and buy a Cessna 150, but the useful load really isn’t that useful for two-up flying. A Cherokee 140 has a better useful load and can be found with IFR instrumentation for a bit more money. Again, decisions, decisions.

I’m hoping to get airborne next week so we can go see some Christmas lights from the air. That’s one of my favorite things to do in a plane.

There’s a documentary about this that you might find useful. I recall it being very insightful.

I believe it was called "catch me if you can".

What!? No. You can't possibly be saying that something the Chinese are peddling is not quite what it's made out to be! There is no precedence for this at all. At all I say! Hmmph.  I'm going to go browse Amazon for some extremely high quality, best available, #1, A+, Chinese products that will absolutely meet and exceed published specifications.

We’ve got drones flying all over the Middle East killing people while their pilots sit in a shipping crate in Nevada . The only difference is scale.

You’ll appreciate this...my club requires at least 3.0 hours of flight time every 90 days to remain current. After last Sunday I had...2.9. Being short on time and money, I did one lap in the pattern in order to make up for those missing 6 minutes. Hopefully, I’ll be in a better spot to go up more after the holidays and won’t be this close to the line.

Toying with getting my complex endorsem ent, but then that would mean remaining current in two airplanes.

I look at Cherokee 140’s as they are “cheap” but then I think I’d like a little more useful load, so I look at 160’s, then I want a little more and I’m looking at 180’s then I’m pricing turbo Saratoga’s....

I know that slippery slope all too well. I wish I could find a local club to buy into. It’s cheaper than owning by myself. I may have to form one on my own.
